First Security Bank sponsored the inaugural Jim Bridger Langlauf Series January 10, 1982 for 167 participants who skied 28km or 6km loops from the Flaming Arrow Touring Center across Crosscut and other private and US Forest Service lands to Brackett Creek and back. Noted mountaineer Alex Lowe won the Beginner Class. The Langlauf Series included the Hyalite Loop Lope and Mystic Marathon each winter. The event continued into the 2000’s with the Bohart Sacajawea Ski Classic 36km Race (2004). The Eighth Annual Sacajawea Classic, sponsored by Bridger Ski Foundation, was held in January 2012. Visit our History page to read more about the history of Nordic skiing in Bridger Canyon.

Beginning with support from major sponsor First Security Bank, Crosscut and numerous sponsors are bringing back this iconic event with two days of skiing: the Sacajawea Classic Ski Race on Crosscut trails February 13, and on February 14 a non-timed family style ski tour (classic skiing only) from Crosscut north to the Custer Gallatin National Forest Battle Ridge Cabin and back. Simple refreshments will be available at the cabin.

Coronavirus Contingencies

In our current year everyone is wanting the opportunity to pursue our passions, Crosscut Mountain Sports Center, First Security Bank, and all our sponsors and supports want to insure that we are keeping our communities and individuals healthy while providing people an opportunity to get out and enjoy winter in Montana. With this said here are some of the contingency plans for this event.

Plan A:

The first plan will be if we are able to run this event as regularly planned

Plan B:

If unable to run full waves for athletes the second plan will be to start in smaller waves by the number of tracks that are able to be set in our start stadium and start waves every 2-5mins depending on number of waves.

Plan C:

If unable to run small wave starts the event will run on an individual start format of 30seconds to 1 min.

Plan D:

Open course during time blocks for individuals to self start and complete race course with timing chip

Plan E:

Fully virtual event during week of competition, all registrants will still receive registration gifts and results will be generated based on virtual timing data.
