Inclement Weather Policy
At any air temperature, any difficult weather conditions, including but not limited to strong winds, high air humidity, heavy snow, lack of snow, and/or icy track conditions, will result in the Crosscut and Race Committee considering the postponement or cancellation the event.
Inclement Winter Weather Considerations
In determining event modifications or cancellations during cold weather, the following variables must be considered
Air temperature (recorded from the CMSC weather station), including:
Time of lowest temperature
Temperature trend throughout the day
Wind & windchill (forecasted from Sacajawea SNOTEL station)
Wind speed and wind gusts (predicted and CMSC live data)
Snowfall, both current accumulation and predicted
Trail conditions
Age of participants
Bridger Bowl Ski Area’s operating plan
Decision Making
The decision to cancel or postpone a competition is typically made by the organizing committee in consultation with Crosscut staff and medical staff. This decision considers current and forecasted weather conditions.
Crosscut reserves the right to make a final determination on cancelation.
Temperature Thresholds for Modification and Cancellation
If anywhere on the course is below -20°C (-4°F), an event may be postponed or cancelled. In some cases, competitions may be canceled if temperatures are between -15°C and -20°C (5°F to -4°F), especially when combined with wind chill factors.
At temperatures of -15°C to -20°C (5°F to -4°F) without wind-chill, an event may be run in a modified format at the discretion of the Race Committee in consultation with Crosscut. Modifications may include a shortened course, a modified start time, changes to the minimum age of racers, or other strategies for minimizing risk to racers, staff, and volunteers. Crosscut and the Race Committee will consider the temperature trends, wind chill factors, and course conditions expected during the event before making their decision.
When course temperatures are below -12°C (10°F), a minimum racing age of 14 may be imposed by Crosscut. Other factors (such as temperature trends and wind chill factors) are considered when making this determination.
Wind Chill Factor
The wind chill factor is critically assessed. Even if temperatures are above the critical threshold, high wind speeds can lead to dangerous wind chill levels, necessitating cancellation or postponement.
Cancellation and Refunds
If Crosscut or the event organizing committee determines that an event cannot be held as scheduled, our first priority will be to select a makeup date later in the season. If no suitable date is available, or conditions prevent rescheduling, the event may be cancelled for the season.
If an event is canceled or postponed for any reason, all registrations will automatically transfer to the designated makeup date. If the event is ultimately cancelled and not rescheduled within the same season, all registered participants will receive complimentary entry to the event during the following season. Refunds will not be provided in the event of a cancellation.
