The trails on Crosscut's rolling and forested terrain are a delight to explore on bicycle. Offering a mix of singletrack, dirt roads and a new skills area, Crosscut is a great place to develop and hone your mountain biking skills and joy of biking on trails. This summer we're offering a mix of one and two-day clinics and private lessons.

Through a partnership with Owenhouse Cycling, clinic participants will have special access to demo bikes for the clinics for FREE. If you plan to use a demo bike, please let us know in the registration process!

Clinics are offered to riders age 18+. Private lessons are for riders age 13+.

Coach Jessie Kay

Jessie brings over a decade of experience in instructing youth, teens, and adults in outdoor adventure sports. She started mountain biking as a cross-training activity for nordic ski racing, and earned her PMBIA certification in 2017. Since then, she has helped build Bozeman's youth mountain biking community as program manager and board member at Bozeman Youth Cycling, led clinics with Owenhouse Cycling, and served as an assistant coach at Ladies Allride. Jessie is a playful rider, an enthusiastic coach, and a lifelong student of the sport.

Introduction to Mountain biking


Just bought a new mountain bike and unsure of where to start? Join us for a clinic focused on honing in the very basics of mountain biking. We will demystify bike components and maintenance, discuss the unspoken rules of mountain bike behavior, and practice foundational bike skills to get you started on your new journey as a mountain biker! We will also discuss how to utilize a growth mindset, embrace fear and vulnerability, and practice self-compassion to find more flow on your bike.

Have never ridden a bike on singletrack trail

Mountain Bike Fundamentals

This clinic is designed for new or emerging trail riders who may have limited experience riding singletrack, or for more experienced riders looking to work on the very basics. We will hone in on the foundational skills of mountain biking to find more flow and comfort riding singletrack. Emphasis will be placed on body position, balance, mobility, and discovering our range of motion on our bikes.

Have prior experience riding non-technical singletrack 
Have a basic understanding of their bike and how to use each component; shifting, braking
Have had little to no formal instruction on a mountain bike

Downhill cornering basics

Cornering clinic

This clinic is intended for experienced riders who have their basic skills down but would like to improve their ability to ride corners on uphill and downhill sections. We will break down the techniques involved in ascending and descending a variety of corners — including switchbacks (tight turns), berms, and flat turns.

Have 2+ years of riding experience and are comfortable riding a variety of trails 
Have basic skills involved in riding (e.g., basic riding body position, braking, shifting, etc.)

Technical skills clinic

Looking to find more flow over technical terrain? Join us for a clinic focused on learning the skills and techniques to negotiate various technical features, including steep climbs, rocky and rooty terrain, small jumps and drops, sharp corners, and skinnies.

This clinic is designed for those who:
Have 2+ years of riding experience and are comfortable riding a variety of trails 
Have the basic skills down involved in riding relatively consistent terrain (e.g., basic riding body position, braking, shifting, etc.)

Skill Focus:
Body position, bike-body separation, and range of motion
Trail scanning
Speed management and brake timing
Balance and track stands
Pressure control
Wheel lifts
Drop and jump technique

Private Lessons

Would 90 minutes of one-on-one time better suit your schedule or skill development goals? Lessons are for riders age 13+ and generally available on Tuesdays from 11AM-3PM and on Wednesdays 11AM-3PM but must be scheduled and confirmed in advance. Pricing begins at $75 per session.
