Soren Joseph Hartnett
With profound pain and difficulty we share the news of the passing of Soren Joseph Hartnett, age 16, on July 18. An undiagnosed heart condition caused a cardiac event while Soren was running a track workout at MSU with his Bridger Ski Foundation (BSF) teammates last Wednesday. BSF coaches administered CPR until local paramedics arrived. Soren was stabilized at Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital and arrived at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City within a few hours. Soren died Saturday evening and was able to donate his liver and both kidneys to three young recipients. ⠀
Soren started biathlon at age 8 to be with his buddies. This interest developed into a strong passion for Biathlon and Nordic Skiing. Soren put all of his energy into it and was on a team representing the United States in biathlon in Norway last winter. A talented and dedicated athlete, Soren kept at it even when competing against 1100 Norwegians.
He also loved backpacking with his crew, mountain biking, running with his team and playing the fiddle. He was central to Bozeman’s Nordic skiing and Biathlon community and his passing leaves so many of us in overwhelming grief.
His family has created the Soren Joseph Hartnett Legacy Scholarship Fund in his memory to support skiers training with BSF Nordic and Crosscut Biathlon. He died at age 16 while doing what he loved most, training with his Nordic skiing teammates. If you are able, please join us in donating.
As we grieve alongside Soren’s family and our friends at Bridger Ski Foundation, let us support each other, connected as Soren’s community.
